Description
Imagine being unable to ask for wants and needs or to voice concerns. You may encounter campers who feel this way, including campers who are neurodiverse or those who have speech and communication challenges. That’s where this pocket guide can come in. Campers can use this guide to point out their needs and wants, and counselors can use it in a variety of ways, from providing visual countdowns to transitions to informing campers about their next activity.
Written by Certified Child Life Specialist Kathryn Hulbert, each page clearly conveys essential communication, daily needs, and feelings for effective non-verbal communication and is organized into seven useful categories:
- Find It Fast, so campers can communicate with you quickly, and point to how they are feeling, respond yes or no, and so you can help with transitions with a 5-minute countdown timer.
- Sensory Needs, so campers can let you know what they need in that moment, such as if the environment is too loud or too quiet or if they need space or need to move.
- Activities, so you can let campers know what is happening next from arts and crafts to group games or swimming. There’s also space for you to fill in two activities that are specific to your camp.
- Places, so you can inform campers where they’re going next.
- Self-Care, so campers can let you know things like if they are hungry, thirsty, have to use the bathroom.
- Things, so campers can let you know what they need or want ,like toys, fidgets, headphones, or books.
- Routine, so campers can learn their daily routine from making their bed and brushing their teeth to cleaning up and going to sleep.
Crafted with thick, durable pages designed to withstand daily use, this pocket guide is great for campers who need an easy-to-use tool to convey their wants, needs, and feelings.
